Some clothes look new forever, and some look like they have already lived. Carhartt WIP's Painter capsule belongs to the second family: washes that fade the fabric unevenly, paint splatters scattered across chest, sleeves and back, logos that look worn down by use. It arrived in our Lanciano shop and online with the fall winter 2026 season, and we took a close look.
where the name comes from
The name says it all. The house painter's wardrobe is one of the classic chapters of American workwear: light, sturdy garments made to get dirty, which over time become a map of the work done. Every stain is a job site, every fade a summer spent on a ladder. Carhartt was born dressing people who work, and Carhartt WIP has always reread that archive for the city: the Painter capsule takes that imagery onto sweatshirts, t-shirts and shirts.
The difference from a simple print is that here the effect is not drawn on top of the garment, it is built into it. It is not about faking a past: it is about starting from a fabric that already has character, instead of waiting years for it to get there.
destroy wash, splatter, worn used: what they mean
On the labels, the capsule is recognisable by three terms. Destroy wash is the wash: colour is discharged unevenly, with lighter areas along seams, edges and folds, as happens to a garment washed a hundred times. Splatter is the paint: small light drops spread without symmetry on front and back. Worn used, on the shirt, indicates a fabric softened and lightened like a work shirt worn for a long time.
The practical consequence is that no two pieces are identical. The position of the splatters and the intensity of the wash change from piece to piece: the photos give the idea, but what you receive is yours.
the pieces in the capsule
The heart of the capsule is the Painter Tee and the Painter Sweatshirt, both with the Carhartt chest logo treated like the rest of the garment. The tee comes in black, tobacco and shady green; the crewneck sweatshirt in black, tobacco and dark navy. They are the easiest pieces to fit into an existing wardrobe: relaxed fit, deep colours, and a wash that does the job of a graphic.
Next to them are the Painter Polo in dark navy, which brings the same treatment to a collared piece, and the LS Painter Shirt, a light blue long-sleeve shirt with a worn used look, where the splatters read clearly on the back. Closing the set is the Hooded Painter Jacket in black, the zip hoodie: the heaviest piece in the capsule, the one to wear open over everything else. You will find them with the season's other sweatshirts.
the women's line
The capsule has a full women's line, and it is not just a size change. The W' Painter Tee comes in black and hortensia, a dusty pink that gains unexpected depth with the destroy wash. The W' Painter Sweatshirt is in black and dusty h brown, a warm sand; the W' Hooded Painter Jacket in hortensia has a shorter, boxier cut.
These pieces work well outside the workwear context too: the dusty h brown sweatshirt over a printed skirt, the hortensia jacket with dark denim. The wash takes the sweetness out of the pink and the formality out of the sand.
how we would wear it
let the wash speak. A Painter piece already carries a lot of information: the rest of the outfit should stay quiet. Solid work trousers, clean sneakers, no other graphics.
tone on tone. The shady green tee with olive cargos, the tobacco sweatshirt with brown canvas. Staying in the same colour family, the irregularities of the wash become the detail people notice.
clean against worn. The worn used shirt open over a new white tee, or the black Hooded Jacket over a pressed shirt. The contrast between a perfect garment and a worn one is the simplest way to make everything look intentional.
how to care for it
A garment treated this way deserves a little care, precisely to preserve the effect. Cold wash, inside out, with similar colours; no tumble dryer. The destroy wash will keep evolving slowly with wear, and that is the point: it is made to age, not to stand still.
